Dr. Robert R. Cargill to speak at Panel on Social Justice, Racism, and Homophobia

Mar. 24, 2009 – Dr. Cargill will be a part of a panel discussion entitled, “Promoting Social Justice: Confronting Racism and Homophobia” at the Pepperdine University West Los Angeles Campus at the Howard Hughes Center. The panel will discuss efforts to bring about better dialogue and understanding between people of different races, religions, gender, and sexual orientation. Robert R. Cargill to Lecture On Virtual Qumran

Apr. 4, 2009 – Dr. Cargill will present a lecture entitled, “Walk the Streets of Qumran at the Dead Sea: A Virtual Reality Film on the Dead Sea Qumran Settlement” at 9:00am as a part of the “Writings form the Ancient World” conference on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at California State University, Fullerton, Irvine Campus, 7320 Trabuco Road, Irvine, CA.

The Duke Symposium on Archaeology and the Media

Apr. 23-24, 2009 – Dr. Cargill will be attending the Duke Symposium on Archaeology and the Media in Raleigh, NC (flyer). The Duke Symposium will explore the often-strained relations between archaeologists and the media and the concomitant impact on local communities in the United States and the Middle East. Specifically, the conference will investigate the methods and values of media representation and those of archaeological investigation, as well as the effects of archaeological excavation and media coverage on the scholarly world, local inhabitants, and American faith communities. Ultimately, the symposium intends to outline better methods of communication between archaeologists, media representatives, and non-specialist audiences. Co-sponsored by the Center for Jewish Studies, the Department of Religion, the Graduate Program in Religion, the Arts and Sciences Committee on Faculty Research, the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute, and the American Schools of Oriental Research.

Dr. Robert R. Cargill to Teach Summer Course on Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls at Portland State

June 15-18, 2009 – Dr. Cargill will be teaching a one week intensive course on “Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls” for the Judaic Studies program at Portland State University. Course Description: (10:30 am – 12:50 pm MTWTh) This course provides an intensive introduction to the most important archaeological discovery of the twentieth century—the library of documents discovered in caves on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea—and explores how the contents of these manuscripts influence our understanding of ancient and modern Judaism and Christianity. This course surveys significant scrolls, the sectarian concepts discussed withing them, and their historical context.
