i shall not be watching jay leno

it’s pretty simple. he agreed to leave the tonight show. then, he backtracked and did a primetime show, which hurt both conan o’brien and a number of nbc writers. then, he failed in primetime. so, he wanted his old job back. so, he exerted tremendous pressure behind the scenes at nbc and used his position to pressure a kind and talented comic, conan o’brien, into leaving his job.

conan played by the rules, was gracious, waited his turned, and still got screwed in the end by a powerful insider who wanted what he wanted.

so, i won’t be watching jay leno. i’ll watch letterman and craig ferguson and jimmy kimmel. but i won’t support those who abuse their position to have their way at the expense of others.

lesson to be learned: don’t be a dick. in this modern age of media, everyone hears everything, and it’s usually recorded somehow. act professionally. act like those you’re talking about are standing next to you. don’t say it if you don’t want it repeated everywhere. act like a professional. and oh yeah, and don’t be a dick.

  1. Amen!

  2. I thought Leno was forced out of his job to let a younger man have it, even though Leno was still doing well when they decided to do that. I think Leno was mistreated in the first place. I don’t blame Conan or Leno for what happened. They just wanted younger viewers which probably brings in more advertising money.

  3. nbc wanted to retain conan, so they promised him the tonight show in x years when jay leno retired. when that time came, however, jay changed his mind. so, they put him in prime time, essentially one-upping conan and the tonight show. when nbc wondered why the ratings were down after only 7 months, instead of simply canceling the bomb of a show that was the jay leno show, they started dumping on conan. they wanted to bump the ‘tonight’ show to tomorrow, that is, 12:05. conan rightly said no, and jay pushed them to make conan leave and give him his show back.

conan got screwed. leno isn’t all that funny (his writers are ok, but not jay), and i don’t like that.

  4. I don’t think Jay Leno ever wanted to retire, so he probably agreed to retire rather than fight NBC which he eventually did anyway in a very public way. I think Leno just pretended to be ok with quitting his show when they first announced it. I think maybe they promised him another time slot which didn’t work out, so then he let loose all of his anger and frustration at being forced to quit a show while he was still number one just so they wouldn’t lose Conan to another network. I think you are blaming Leno, but Leno finally revealed his real anger at being forced to retire when he was still successful. He even said in his jokes that only at NBC do you get fired for having a number one show.
